Navigating travel during this pandemic can get a bit overwhelming. International exit and entry requirements are constantly changing. Many countries have recently reopened either fully or partially. However, not all are welcoming American tourists arriving from the US and, if they are, it’s not without restrictions. A lot of travelers have been vaccinated and are, therefore, able to travel to more places. On the other hand, there are a lot of travelers who are unvaccinated or weary of the COVID test. Without proof of vaccination (or a vaccination wavier) or a PCR test, it’s pretty difficult to travel internationally these days. I managed to find a handful of countries open to US travelers and require no PCR test, vaccination, or quarantine.
Be aware that even though many countries have opened their borders, there are still strong advisories against visiting them during the pandemic. However, if you must, be sure to take proper precautions and follow each country’s safety guidelines.
Here, I have provided a list of countries open to US travelers that require no COVID-19 testing, vaccination, or quarantine for entry. These are the entry requirements at the time of my writing this post. I’ll update this list if any restrictions are imposed or if any other countries open without the aforementioned restrictions.
Entry is unrestricted, but there is a curfew in effect from 10:00 pm until 6:00 am.
All US citizens are required to show proof of a valid travel insurance policy for potential COVID related medical expenses. The insurance should cover quarantine up to $2,000 and up to $50,000 in medical expenses. Along with the insurance policy, policyholders will need to provide a certification (in English or Spanish) from their insurer with the following information: 1) the policy’s validity through the duration of the visit 2) guaranteed medical coverage for up to $50,000 in case of COVID-related medical expenses 3) at least $2,000 coverage for quarantine lodging. For more details, visit the U.S. Embassy in Costa Rica webpage. Travelers will also need to complete an epidemiological health pass.
Upon each entry and exit of the country, travelers will need to fill out an Electronic Ticket. Quarantine is required only for COVID positive travelers. Movement is restricted Monday through Friday from 10 pm to 5 am and Saturday and Sunday from 9 pm to 5 am. There’s a grace period for transit until 12 am. If travel to the airport is necessary during curfew hours, travelers must present their passports, ticket, and travel itinerary to the authorities. There are a few movement restrictions within the airport, so be sure to check out the US Embassy in the Dominican Republic’s website for more information.
Travel between the US and Mexico via land is restricted to “essential travel” and remains in effect until 11:59 on June 21, 2021.
US travelers arriving from African countries, Brazil and India are required to quarantine for 14 days. Until June 1, 2021, there is a curfew in effect from12:00 am until 4:00 am with some exceptions regarding transit. For more details, see the U.S. Embassy in North Macedonia webpage.
